Soulbrotha of 4BB fame has brought us a fiiiiiine sounding rip of the final missing piece of the Cobblestone puzzle. And what a beautiful and punchy set it is. Ruth Brown has soul for days. Soulbrother, you are a prince among men! This completes the Cobblestone set and makes me smile, a lot :)
Here's what the man had to say:
I was the one who purchased the Ruth Brown album on Amazon. I love Ruth Brown ( I went to her funeral) and when you guys mentioned it in the comments I figured I would go ahead and purchase it. Unfortunately, the last track was scratched. I cleaned the tracks and tried my best to fix the skip, but no dice. I contacted the seller and he apologized and graciously gave me my money back and let me keep the album!
I love the album. It has a "live" feeling to it, just without the audience chatter. She begins each track with a spoken intro which gives it an intimate feel. My new Black History Month/Martin Luther King Day track is Hurricane Change. There's just something about her intro that feels so personal.
I think the reason that there is so little information about this album is because this was released in 1972, when she was trying to make a comeback. From the late 60's to the mid-70's, her career flat-lined and to feed her family, she joined the Head Start program and trained to be a beautician while working as a maid, a cashier, a nurse's aide AND a babysitter!! In the mid-70's Redd Foxx helped revive her career by casting her in bit parts on Sanford & Son. She also had recurring roles on two horrible sitcom bombs, Hello Larry and Checking In.
SOUL!
SOUL!
